Christopher WolterLicensed Psychoanalyst

Writing & Talks

My work sits at the intersection of Lacanian clinical theory, critical approaches to psychosis, and the ethics of analytic practice.

Psychoanalysis began with neurosis and then sought to understand psychosis. I work in the other direction: beginning from psychosis, what can we understand about the analytic act as such? My current research examines what structural psychoanalysis offers to contemporary conversations about trauma, alienation, and the social conditions of psychological suffering.

Dissertation

Foreclosure: The Trauma of Subjectivity. European Graduate School, in progress; supervised by Mladen Dolar.

The dissertation argues that foreclosure is not the aftermath of trauma but its structural condition: that the subject of trauma, the one for whom a wound has become the central thesis of existence, is a subject of foreclosure in the Lacanian clinical sense. It reads Freud's founding cases alongside the contemporary clinic of psychosis, and asks what an analytic ethics looks like when the analyst is understood as a dramaturge rather than an orthopedist.
